Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Manager to run the operations at AIXTRON Ltd. This is a key role responsible for the manufacturing of AIXTRON’s products in the UK and ensuring that the output of the factory meets quality, delivery time and cost metrics. AIXTRON is a world leading manufacturer of semiconductor equipment and the AIXTRON Ltd facility in Cambridgeshire manufactures key MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) systems for the group. Our MOCVD systems are used to produce (opto)electronics for 5G, fibre communications, lasers, LEDs for displays and power electronics for electric vehicles and chargers.

The demand for AIXTRON’s systems has grown significantly in recent years and an important project moving forwards is the transformation of our existing shop floor, which the Manufacturing Manager is expected to lead. The candidate will ideally have a background in production process optimisation to achieve lowering of cycle times, and be able to define our future manufacturing concept which would enable us to significantly increase our output capacity, whilst giving us the flexibility to build different products according to the customer needs.

This person has a key role in the management team of AIXTRON Ltd reporting to the Managing Director, working alongside other managers in the product delivery chain such as purchasing, logistics and quality. The Manufacturing Manager will be responsible for the production team (18 people, covering assembly, test and product specialist activities), planning team (2 people) as well as the production engineering team (2 people). This is a hands-on position in managing the existing ways of manufacturing, but also being able to conceptualise, create and implement our manufacturing environment for the future.

 

In detail:

Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the factory’s “output plan” which comprises systems, upgrades and spares. Drive the shop floor activities via your Production Manager and the production team, covering mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, testing and specialist product activities. Schedule the manufacturing and material through the shop floor via Planning. Work closely with other departments such as Purchasing to ensure material is available at the right time; Quality to handle part rejection and ensuring the utmost quality in our products; Logistics for parts flow and final packing and shipping of the products.
  • Lead and implement the future manufacturing concept for the site in the shop floor transformation project, where the goal is to double our manufacturing output.
  • Drive improvement of manufacturing methods and processes via your Production Engineers. Be able to use quantitative metrics and statistical methods to achieve improved yields and lower cycle times, through design and optimisation of processes and digitization. Is capable of evaluating a product design and make recommendations with respect to its manufacturability, effort, time and cost.
  • Participates in various product development projects for emerging products, as a member of cross functional team, and coordinating the special build activities between Engineering and Manufacturing.
  • Align activities with our corporate headquarters; this includes coordinating cross-site manufacturing initiatives, capacity utilization across sites and reporting regularly at the AIXTRON Group.
  • Supervision of own direct reports and team, including, resource planning, recruiting, appraisals, training, development planning, inductions and risk assessments/safety for areas/tasks under your responsibility.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • At least a Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or related Manufacturing discipline. 
  • At least 5 years of experience of running Production or Operations of large, complex, capital equipment.
  • Proven experience in driving manufacturing improvements in an organisation through lean/6-sigma, pFMEA, design for manufacture, structuring workflows and BOMs.
  • Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office, with familiarity with SAP for operations.
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to customer satisfaction through quality, efficiency and professionalism.
  • Highly motivated, independent with demonstrable ownership and accountability of large projects, results driven and be able to effectively lead and supervise a team.
  • Open and clear communication skills and experience working with stakeholders in management as well as in a corporate environment.

 

Working conditions / Environment

  • You will adopt the working practices of ISO9001.
  • Normally a day shift role, with significant flexibility required especially at quarter/year end. 
  • Based at AIXTRON Ltd, Buckingway Business Park, Anderson Road, Swavesey, Cambridgeshire CB24 4FQ, UK.
  • Some travel will be required to our corporate headquarters in Germany or to key manufacturing partners.
