AIXTRON is a world leading manufacturer of semiconductor equipment and the AIXTRON Ltd facility in Cambridgeshire manufactures key MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) systems for the group. Our MOCVD systems are used to produce (opto) electronics for 5G, fibre communications, lasers, LEDs for displays and power electronics for electric vehicles and chargers.

We are seeking a Department Manager for our System Order Engineering group, focused on the CCS MOCVD (Close Coupled Showerhead Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) product line. You will require a hands-on approach to manage the day to day running of the department including responsibility for the overall status of projects/initiatives, budget, resource planning and scheduling, team development, training and recruitment. Working closely with other operations departments, you will share the company’s objective of delivering customer-configured systems with the appropriate engineering documentation, whilst meeting the cost and manufacturability targets for the systems. Through a continual improvement methodology, you will contribute to manufacturing efficiency improvements (both internal build and external outsourcing), cost down projects, lead and mentor engineers to instill engineering principles and best practices and ensure the department is set up strategically for success as the business carries out its mission statement. Your team comprises of multidisciplinary engineers spanning mechanical design, controls/electrical design, software configuration and documentation.

Our MOCVD systems are used to produce (opto) electronics for 5G, fibre communications, lasers, LEDs for displays and power electronics for electric vehicles and chargers.

 

Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Managing the configuration of orders (systems, specials and upgrades) tailored to the customer requirements, supporting the sales and marketing teams (quotes, costings, technical questions)
  • As new products are introduced, your team will take ownership and productize them as they are handed over from the Development Engineering team and enter serial production. Such activities at the initial phase include rationalization and modularisation of the BOM, design for manufacture, cost optimization, outsource manufacture, etc. 
  • Overall responsible for manufacturing engineering projects using own team and/or external design companies to achieve the project/design objectives.
  • Running a program of continuous improvement for systems, including addressing field issues, cost down opportunities, internal factory efficiency improvements (e.g. system build time reduction).
  • Supporting the operation and field service teams as and when complex multi-disciplinary cross-function issues are identified, including implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Manage the change note process for the business.
  • Manage obsolescence and support the wider organization on part availability issues and sourcing of alternatives.
  • Ensuring full product documentation is provided to operations to support build and test.
  • Delivering customer and internal documentation, with departmental responsibilities including hosting customer visits for system acceptance and training.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Required Degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
  • Required at least 5 years’ experience as a manager or a team leader
  • Required strong cross-functional technical knowledge for design for manufacture - covering mechanical, electrical and control aspects. Must have a strong attention to engineering detail.
  • Desirable experience in MOCVD, vacuum/gas equipment, or large capital cost semiconductor equipment.
  • Required experience of implementing and promoting a continuous improvement culture
  • Required understanding of project management practices and processes
  • Desirable to be financially astute, can budget, forecast and manage against financial measures
  • Excellent communication and rapport building skills; ability to convey highly technical concepts in a business context
  • Be able to manage a team, and work effectively with multiple competing requests through prioritisation and delegation
  • Motivated, assertive and able to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Required computer literacy with proficiency with Microsoft Office and SAP.
