!!! Press Release !!! Fraunhofer Institute succeeds with blue GaN Electroluminescence as part of German Government Program The Fraunhofer Institute, in a consortium together with SIEMENS and TEMIC, is developing a working blue LED from GaN. Says Karl Bachem, who heads the research group at Fraunhofer: We´ve bought an AIXTRON AIX 200/4 HT system and adapted full 2" processes, which is not yet really big, but a minimum for industry." Now the group reports that they can fabricate LED test structures with good, reproducible blue electroluminescence at 408nm. In the next step the group will improve brightness and move to higher wavelengths.
Blue LED Emission at 408 nm The AIX 200/4 HT is the GaN research reactor which is based on the proven AIX 200 reactor chamber used in more than 100 laboratories worldwide. The AIX 200/4 HT option is also available as a retrofit kit for all existing AIX 200 systems. All AIXTRON reactors are two flow, horizontal reactors, with high gas utilization efficiency, optional In content control system, guaranteed abrupt interfaces and proven process scaling capabilities for the transfer of processes to the larger AIX 2000/24000 HT multiwafer Planetary Reactors® for GaN. The AIX 200/4 HT has been purchased by companies such as HP Labs (Palo Alto) and by Prof. Razeghi (Northwestern University, Evanston). The AIX 2000/2400 HT is already employed for multilayer GaN growth in the leading industrial LED facilities in California, Japan, Taiwan and Korea.
