!!! Press Release !!! AIXTRON preparing for
further growth: Herzogenrath, Germany, August 5, 1999. Today Peer Steinbrueck, the Minister for Economic Affairs and Technology of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, laid the foundation stone for the new AIXTRON production plant to be built in Herzogenrath seconded by Kim Schindelhauer and Dr. Holger Juergensen, the Executive Board of AIXTRON. Petra Meisler and Gerd Zimmermann, vice mayor and town clerk of Herzogenrath and Aachen's Mayor Dr. Juergen Linden adressed the audience including numerous business associates and guests. The over 10,000 m2 lot, only a few minutes from the company's head office in Aachen, will host another plant for the assembly of MOCVD equipment used in manufacturing of compound semiconductors. The plant is being constructed in three stages, with the company's goal being to increase the existing production capacity tenfold in the long term. Following the completion of the first construction phase, production will be gradually moved to the new plant starting in Q1 2000, thus creating more space for research and development activities and custom manufacturing at the Aachen site. A new logistics concept is designed to maximize AIXTRON's production flows, resulting in significantly shorter delivery times and hence adding considerable value for customers. After all, markets for compound semiconductors are growing rapidly and, as a result, the demand for AIXTRON equipment. Minister Peer Steinbrück was impressed by the company's growth. "AIXTRON was a shining example of a company that started life as a spin-off of RWTH Aachen and had since become a world market leader. He also stressed the growing importance of high-tech companies for North Rhine-Westphalia". City director Gerd Zimmermann expressed his pride in the new AIXTRON plant in Herzogenrath: "The presence of a world-famous company is not just a massive boost to our image. It is particularly important since AIXTRON plans to create 100 jobs over the next few years". The Aachen Mayor, Dr. Linden, emphasized "the importance of young, innovative companies in the development of Aachen as a high-tech region, and stressed the key role and economic significance of AIXTRON". By opening a new plant in Herzogenrath, AIXTRON, a globally active company with an export ratio of over 85%, has voted in favor of Germany as a location for industry and commerce. Key factors influencing its decision are the quality of employees available, who are often recruited from neighboring research institutions, and the first-class suppliers in the "Rhein-Maas Euregio" and the latter's central location in Europe. As a world market and technology leader, AIXTRON supplies the basic technology for numerous high-tech applications and innovative products: LEDs for modern illumination and signal technology, lasers for consumer electronics and fiber-optic data transfer, special transistors for mobile data transfer and mobile phones, as well as solar cells for applications in space.
