!!! Press Release !!! The first LED traffic lights
in the Aachen region: Aachen, 25.05.99. A future-oriented technology is entering Aachen via LED traffic light equipment: a pilot project based on modern LED technology has been officially launched today. This pilot project is being undertaken with the support of Siemens, AIXTRON and the city of Aachen. It is to be expected that, within a short period of time, further traffic lights in Germany will be re-equipped with LED technology. The technology demonstrates impressive advantages: not only does it provide huge cost savings to the community because of its significantly lower energy consumption and reduced maintenance costs - LEDs have a useful life of more than 10 years - it also improves safety. Even in bright sunlight, there is no longer any danger from specular reflection or from phantom light. Outside Germany, this progressive technology has already been well tested and deployed: traffic lights based on LEDs are leading the way in Asian countries, as well as in the US. Now it's Europe's turn. Zurich, for example, is currently equipping 5,000 traffic lights with LED technology. Also in England, Sweden, France and Belgium, the replacement of electric bulbs with LEDs is unstoppable. The Aachen pilot project is taking place in immediate vicinity of AIXTRON, which supplies the key technology for LEDs. The heart of an LED is a compound semiconductor, whose manufacture is carried out on AIXTRON's MOCVD equipment. Dr Holger Juergensen, President of AIXTRON, says: "All of AIXTRON's visitors, suppliers and customers, as well as the inhabitants of the region, can see the practical application and the improvements in our day-to-day life brought about by AIXTRON equipment." And Kim Schindelhauer, President of AIXTRON, adds: "The association every day with the products of the semiconductor industry will convince a critical community and enhance the acceptance of the potential of the semiconductor industry in Aachen. In the long-term, this demonstration of the harmony between science and application will secure jobs in the region." Due to its technological superiority, AIXTRON equipment offers users decisive advantages - greater productivity and thus lower costs-of-ownership, high levels of reliability and superior quality products. AIXTRON's leading position in the world market underlines this strikingly: World market share has risen in the last 15 months to currently more than 40 per cent.
